Health and Physical Education

Studying Health and Physical Education fosters a balanced and active lifestyle while promoting overall well-being. This field encompasses knowledge and practices that promote physical fitness, mental health, and the acquisition of lifelong healthy habits. Through Health Education, students gain valuable insights into nutrition, developing respectful relationships, health practices and the importance of making informed decisions regarding their wellbeing. Physical Education encourages students to engage in physical activities, develop motor skills and appreciate the benefits of an active lifestyle. It provides opportunities for students to participate in team sports, individual fitness activities, and outdoor pursuits, fostering teamwork, leadership, and perseverance. Moreover, Health and Physical Education promote the understanding of body systems, the effects of exercise on overall health, and strategies for injury prevention. By studying Health and Physical Education, students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain physical fitness, prioritise self-care, and make informed choices about their health while instilling values of discipline, resilience, and self-motivation, paving the way for a lifetime of optimal wellbeing.

  • The Health Studies ATAR course focuses on the study of health as a dynamic quality of human life. Students will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary for the personal and community action required in promoting health. The course covers the influence of social, environmental, economic and biomedical determinants of health. Through an inquiry process students will investigate various health issues and concerns. This course will prepare students for career and employment pathways in a range of health and community services.

    Course Pre-Requisites: 60% in Year 10 Health

  • The Year 11 Physical Education Studies ATAR syllabus focuses on providing students with a comprehensive understanding of physical education principles, practices, and theories. The course covers various key areas, including skill development, biomechanics, training methods, physical fitness, and movement analysis, exercise physiology, motor learning and coaching, sports psychology, and functional anatomy. Students will explore factors that influence performance, such as energy systems, motor learning, training principles and methods, and biomechanical concepts. The Physical Education ATAR course aims to provide students with a range of employment pathways in the sport and recreation industries, education, health fields linked to physical activity and community sport development.

    Course Pre-Requisites: 60% in Year 10 Science and/or 60% in Year 10 Sports Science

  • The Outdoor Education General course invites students to develop their appreciation of our environment, others and themselves. Based on an experiential learning cycle, students are empowered to thoroughly plan, participate in and reflect on activities in the natural world. Through this, students will engage in a range of challenging outdoor tasks, such as sailing, snorkelling, mountain biking, basic outdoor first aid and camping. Through these experiences students will strengthen their understanding of group dynamics and their leadership capacity. Students will also have the opportunity to explore environmental management, sustainability and how to minimise their impact on the environment.

    Course Pre-requisites: Competent swimming ability

  • The Physical Education Studies General course promotes the physical, social and emotional growth of students. Through the integration of theory and practice, students are encouraged to refine their performance in physical activities. Students will engage as performers, leaders, analysts and coaches of physical activity and will encounter concepts to support their practice, including physiological, biomechanical and psychological theories. This course is purposefully designed to prepare students for a range of pathways in sport, education and leisure and recreation activities.

  • The Health Studies General course focuses on the importance of wellbeing as a quality of life. Students will gain a thorough understanding of the importance of community and personal action in preserving health. Through an inquiry process, this course allows students to consider the many factors which impact our health as well as the role of our beliefs, values and attitudes. Students will research a health issue of interest and the course is designed to prepare students for a range of pathways in health and community service.

    Pre-requisites: NIL

  • This qualification develops the skills and knowledge needed to lead coaching sessions in a particular sport. Students may find this qualification develops the skills and capabilities for assistant coach roles where they work alongside a coach.

    Units of competency in this certificate include:

    • Being an effective volunteer

    • Working as an official in sport

    • Conducting coaching sessions with foundation level participants

    Course Pre-Requisites: NIL

  • This qualification provides students with the competencies and knowledge needed to deliver recreational activities under the direction of supervisors and leaders. Students will develop the skills to work in both indoor and outdoor recreation environments in assistant positions in accordance with industry codes of practice.

    Units of competency in this certificate include:

    • Demonstrating navigation skills in a controlled environment

    • Assisting in preparing and conducting sports and recreation sessions

    • Responding to emergency situations
