Welcome to Term 2

Welcome to Week 2

A very warm welcome back to the start of another exciting term at the College. I hope, as always, that families and friends took time to spend some quality time together over the break.

ANZAC Day

In the lead up to ANZAC Day on Thursday, we paused as a College community on Monday this week to honour all Australians who are serving, and have served, in theatres of conflict in many parts of the world.

We were thrilled to have Mr Peter Collins, father of Year 10 student William, attend our ceremony. Mr Collins served in the Australian Army for 15 years and saw active service in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Whilst in service he performed duties as both a Medic and a Fitter Armourer. We acknowledge Mr Collins’ service to our country and thank him for giving of his time so generously yesterday.

We also acknowledge Cadets Alex Cann, William Collins and Maxwell Coughlan for their contribution to the ceremony in leading us through the laying of the wreath, the Last Post and the Reveille.

Celebrating ANZAC Day is a very important part of the Australian culture. It is not a celebration of war but rather an acknowledgement of the exploits, bravery and courage of all those who have served and are currently serving our country. The day allows us to reflect on the legacy of the ANZACs which continues to shape our society today.

During the ceremony, we reflected on the Spirit of the ANZAC which was suggested by official war historian C.E.W. Bean to have "stood, and still stands, for reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship and endurance that will never own defeat."

We also reflected on the values that underpinned the ANZACs and explored how we can take inspiration from them in upholding what we stand for through living our own College values out in a genuine way. We encouraged all students to proudly represent the AvĐÔ°® Christi and honour the crest, its heritage and meaning, each day they put on the College uniform - just like the ANZACs did in donning theirs.

Commemorating ANZAC Day importantly also reminds us, just as Jesus did, to strive toward peace always and to seek to love one another just as he loved us. “It is by continuing to work towards a future of peace and security for all, that we can best honour all those who have and continue to serve our country” (Dame Cindy Kiro)

As conflict continues to impact so many people around our world, we pray for peace:

Lord God, as we are currently in the Easter Season, we rejoice in the new life Your Son the Risen Jesus gives us. You offer us hope and peace. We thank You for this treasured land of ours, Australia. Today as we remember the Anzac soldiers who sought to uphold the value of freedom and who fought to protect our country, help us to be inspired by their efforts and to strive for peace in all we do. Lord Jesus, and His Church, the Body of Christ – Pray for us. Amen.

Inter House Cross Country Carnival

In another first at our K-12 College, we were thrilled to hold our inaugural whole school Inter-House Cross Country Carnival at Piney Lakes Reserve on Tuesday last week.

This signature event allowed students to showcase their talents and to represent their House with pride. It was wonderful to see so many students courageously giving their best, committing fully to the event, and compassionately helping others in their time of need.

We acknowledge Head of Sport, Mr James Howard and the HPE team along with the House Community Coordinators for their enormous efforts in bringing the day to fruition. It was also excellent to see so many parents and families present which added to the exciting atmosphere on the day.

Congratulations to all students who took part in the event, with special commendation to the year level champions and runners up who were recognised at our awards ceremony on Friday last week.  Well done also to the following Houses for winning carnival shields:

  • Junior Shield - Xavier

  • Senior Shield -    Mackillop

  • Overall Shield - Mackillop

College Musical Production – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

This week is a very exciting time in the life of the College as many months of hard work and dedication come to fruition with the launch of our whole school musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Tonight is Opening Night with shows continuing through to Saturday.

In the build-up to Opening Night, we were very pleased today to welcome around 400 students from local primary schools to attend the full-dress rehearsal and enjoy a sneak peak of what promises to be an outstanding production.

I would like to acknowledge the enormous efforts of Director Mrs Jo Palmer and Co-Director Melissa Kelly along with the extensive staff team who have worked tirelessly to ensure that all is in readiness for tonight.

I would also like to acknowledge our amazing students who have courageously stepped outside of their comfort zone, committed themselves fully to the preparation and rehearsal process and been compassionately there for one another – they have epitomised what it means to live out our College values and are to be commended for their efforts.

Performance details and access to the limited range of remaining tickets are available here.

K-12 College Uniform – Summer/Winter Changeover

We would like to advise our community that the two-week grace period into Term 2 for the transition from summer to winter uniform concludes at the end of this week. This means that all students will need to attend school in their full winter uniform commencing Monday next week (Week 3). We are very grateful to our families for their terrific support of the new winter-uniform roll out.

Leave

I would like to inform our community that I will be on leave during the month of May. Vice Principal Mr Tim Shanassy will assume the role of Acting Principal in my absence.

College Calendar

As a school which prides itself on providing multiple holistic learning opportunities for students, we consequently have a very busy College calendar.

To support clarity of communication, I remind families to regularly access the College Calendar here and also the College App here. These communication strategies were co-developed with the school by our Friends of AvĐÔ°® and continue to be fine-tuned to provide a quality user experience.

Student Free Days

A reminder to all families that tomorrow, April 24th, marks a student-free day for students as we will be conducting Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews. Also, Thursday, April 25th, is a public holiday to honour ANZAC Day. Enjoy the well-deserved break together!

Best wishes and every blessing.

Jeff Allen

Principal

Welcome to Term 2!

This term there are some major events and projects in our Catholic Identity and Mission space that include students, staff and families! We are excited to share these with you.

Week 3 – Year 7 Quest Breakfast – Families and Students

On Tuesday 30 April we will be hosting a breakfast for Year 7 Students and their families as a follow-up from their Quest Retreat that occurred in Week 2 of Term 1. Our Year 11 and 12 Quest and Cadre Leaders will also attend. The breakfast is an opportunity for students and parents/guardians to meet, check in with Home Teachers, and be present for the launch of the Year 7 Winter Appeal – Canned Food Drive. More specific details will be communicated soon by email. We look forward to seeing you there!

 Week 3 – Year 10 Retreat

In Week 3, our Year 10s will embark on their retreat centered around the theme "Answering the Call," drawing inspiration from Matthew 7:7-12. This three-day event will include reflection, acts of service, and opportunities to contemplate their futures, aligning with the Own Your Own Path Expo in the same week. Further details will follow via email.

Week 3 - Winter Appeal

On Tuesday of Week 3 we will officially launch our College-wide Winter Appeal, engaging students from Pre-Kindy to Year 12 in supporting those in need during colder months. Each year level will focus on specific donations to ensure our impact as a community is maximised. Details will be emailed, but here's a basic guide for planning support:

  • Junior School - non-perishables (not canned food – pasta, rice, cereal, etc.)

  • Year 7 - canned food

  • Year 8  - winter clothing

  • Year 9 -  sleeping rough (blankets, sleeping bags, tents, etc)

  • Year 10 - protective clothing – gloves, socks, beanies/hats, scarves, etc.

  • Year 11 and 12  - toiletries and personal hygiene items

Damian Ramos - Deputy Catholic Identity and Mission

Week 4 – Fr Rob Galea

During Week 4 we will have world famous priest, Fr Rob Galea, visiting the College. He and his band will spend most of Tuesday with our Year 11 students and Wednesday with our Year 12 Students. Fr Rob is an inspiring musician who uses his story and journey to faith to capture people’s hearts in minds! On Thursday evening there will be a charity concert with Fr Rob and his band with proceeds going to Caritas Australia and LifeLink WA.

Parish Mission – St Thomas More Parish

Saint Thomas More Parish will be hosting their Parish Mission from Wednesday 8 until Saturday 11 May.

Saint Pat’s Kitchen

We had an overwhelming number of students volunteer to cook for Saint Patrick’s Community Support Centre in Fremantle. From Week 3, each Thursday after school, students will cook a variety of meals that can be frozen and served to people who need it most. We thank the generosity of our staff and students for giving up their time and resources in this way for what is such an amazing cause.

Staff Prayer  - Mondays in the Parish Church

You may have noticed that on Monday mornings our staff have been gathering for prayer in the Parish Church. This is a wonderful opportunity for our staff to gather in the presence of the Eucharist to pray. As the AvĐÔ°® Christi – the Body of Christ – praying in this way brings us together and reminds us of our mission to serve God through the learning and experiences we bring to our students. We thank Fr Phong and the Parish Council for the beautiful partnership between our communities.

Launch of new Acts of Service Program

The College, in collaboration with the Student Ministry Team, is revamping its approach to acknowledging student service. Instead of focusing solely on hours logged, we're shifting towards recognizing impactful acts of service. A new program launching in Semester Two will use tiered systems to track and reward these efforts. The Student Ministry Team is currently finalising the program details and preparing for its launch in Term 2. This initiative aims to streamline service requirements while empowering students to contribute meaningfully to social justice causes.

Damian Ramos-Nunez

Deputy Principal Catholic Identity and Mission

A review of the College’s Homework Club offerings was conducted in Term One of this year with the goal of maximising the time available for students to refine their study skills and approach to homework.

Following feedback from the student leadership team, we are pleased to announce that the new and invigorated A.S.P.I.R.E Club (formerly known as Homework Club) is ready to launch in Term 2. The acronym A.S.P.I.R.E stands for Academic Success, Progress, Innovation and Revision and captures the types of activities students can engage in to propel their academic growth.

A.S.P.I.R.E Club is open Monday to Friday before school from 7.30am and after school Monday to Thursday from 3.20pm to 4.30pm in the library. During these times, students can arrange to meet with teachers to seek further feedback, collaborate with their peers, complete homework, study for examinations or participate in revision workshops.

I look forward to seeing students across all year levels at A.S.P.I.R.E and there will be further notices about revision opportunities throughout the year.

Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning

Reporting of Absentees

If your child is absent from school there are a variety of ways in which parents can inform the College, more information is located HERE. Absentees can be reported through a variety of means, including the online form, SMS or email absentee@corpus.wa.edu.au. The least preferred method is via call due to the translation of the voice message being unclear at times, please reserve calling for emergencies only. It is very important that you provide your child’s full name, their classroom/homeroom, and the reason for their absence. Please ensure any emails are sent to Absentee@corpus.wa.edu.au and not individual staff email accounts within Student Services. The College will shortly be undertaking a review of the variety of methods used to report absences and is looking to streamlining the number of methods in which this can be done.

Week 2 Update

Dear Parents and Guardians

As we bid farewell to the restful days of the school holidays and eagerly step into the vibrant rhythm of Term Two, I extend a warm welcome to all our families. Your support and engagement are invaluable as we nurture and inspire our students’ growth and learning journey.

I am delighted to introduce Miss Courtney Hill, who joins our dedicated team this Term as she covers Year 5 Blue. With her passion for education and commitment to fostering a dynamic classroom environment, we are confident that she will contribute greatly to the success and well-being of our students.

The Circles All Around Us

In the circles all around us, everywhere that we all go, there's a difference we can make and a love we can all show.

During the school break, I stumbled upon Brad Montague's captivating picture book, “The Circles All Around Us”. Montague, the creative genius behind the beloved Kid President, is renowned for crafting content that resonates with both children and adults, weaving in powerful messages. His debut picture book beautifully echoes the values we cherish at our College: compassion, commitment, and courage. Through heart-warming tales and profound reflections, Montague invites families and young students on a journey of embracing interconnectedness and celebrating the worth of every individual. With gentle encouragement, he urges readers to expand their circles of connection, fostering unity and empathy. I enthusiastically recommend this book as an ideal tool for sparking conversations about connection, friendship, and the transformative power of belonging to a diverse community.

Interhouse Cross-Country Event

We kicked off our Term with a successful Year 3 to 12 Interhouse Cross-Country Carnival! It was an exhilarating event filled with fierce competition, unwavering determination, and boundless school spirit. Our students displayed remarkable athleticism and sportsmanship as they navigated the challenging course, pushing themselves to new heights with each stride. Every student showcased their dedication and passion for their team, from the youngest participants in Year 3 to the seasoned athletes in Year 12. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all participants for their outstanding performance and teamwork.

Values

Finally, as a school, we continue to look to embed our sense of belonging further as we focus on respectful relationships in our community. In belonging to our community, we genuinely live out our values:

Compassion - we are kind, respectful and caring toward others and our environment.

Courage - we hold ourselves accountable for our own actions.

Commitment - we are committed to our learning and that of others.

Katya Anderson

Head of Junior School

Jack Duffy's (Year 9) summer of 2023/2024 was a whirlwind of success in sports. Despite stiff competition, his Teeball team clinched a commendable third-place finish, highlighted by a triumphant win at the Warren Lake Carnival. Jack's leadership propelled Thornlie District Teeball to claim the gold medal, showcasing his sheer determination. Beyond Teeball, Jack's prowess extended to baseball, culminating in a victorious grand final. Now, gearing up for charter baseball over Easter, Jack promises more thrilling moments. His summer saga exemplifies resilience, skill, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, setting the stage for even greater triumphs ahead.

Zachary Mellor

Zachary Mellor (Year 11) was a member of the King Canute Crew that completed the 2024 60th Cape Naturaliste and Return Ocean Race. Total crew of 6. The sailing ocean race started from Fremantle to Bunker Bay and then returned to Fremantle.

The King Kanute Crew completed the race in 1 day 10 hours 10 minutes and 59 seconds. Starting the race at 6pm on Friday 22nd March and finishing at 4.10am Sunday 24th March.

Zachary at the age of 16 is an experienced sailor but this was an outstanding achievement for someone so young. Showing  plenty of bravery and resilience in some extremely tough sailing conditions. To put it into context one boat Baci sank during the race, luckily no one was hurt.

 Well done Zac!

Ruth Vincent

We are thrilled to announce that Ruth Vincent, one of our talented Public Speaking Captains in Year 12, has progressed to the State Finals for the prestigious Lions Youth of the Year Competition.

In the District final on Saturday 23rd March, Ruth showcased her exceptional talent by clinching the overall Public Speaking Prize for her prepared speech and impromptu speaking performances. Her captivating speech on beauty standards resonated deeply, demonstrating her insight and passion for youth issues.

As Ruth gears up to represent the state on April 27th in Duncraig, it's crucial for our community to rally behind her. Let's show our support and encouragement for Ruth as she prepares to dazzle the judges with her charisma, intellect, and talent in the upcoming State Final.

Congratulations, Ruth, on this remarkable accomplishment! Your journey is an inspiration to us all, and we're confident that you'll continue to shine brightly as both a public speaker and an outstanding young individual. Go forth and make us proud!

World's Greatest Shave - Team AvĐÔ°®

Team AvĐÔ°®, consisting of a number of Year 12 students and staff are participating in this event. We would appreciate any donations via the QR code attached. Blood cancer is Australia's hidden cancer crisis. There are 140,000 families facing blood cancer right now. And it takes the lives of 16 Australians every day.

These numbers are set to double by 2035. Unless we do something about it. That's why we've signed up for the World's Greatest Shave. We're raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation to give Australians facing blood cancer life-changing practical and emotional support. And to fund critical research, bringing us closer to the day when zero lives are lost to blood cancer.

Welcome to Week 8, Term 1

Opportunities for Growth and Connection

As the end of a busy term rapidly draws to a close, we reflect on the amazing amount of Community, Learning and Catholic Identity opportunities available at the College. It has been very pleasing to see so many students invest heavily in the life of the school this term by engaging so enthusiastically in the events and activities on offer. It has been wonderful to see students reach out in support of one another, build connections, develop quality relationships and celebrate being part of this very special school community.

From the Opening Mass to our numerous club and sporting opportunities; from the multitude of excursions, camps and retreats through to our House events and celebrations, we aim to provide engagement opportunities for all students across our K-12 school. This philosophy has been very much in evidence over the past few weeks through several key calendared events:

Year 8 AvĐÔ°® and Retreat

  • This year we incorporated an outstanding Retreat experience into the Year 8 AvĐÔ°®. Students were excellent, investing their time and energy fully in the activities presented. They stepped outside of their comfort zone to explore their faith and to connect with others. We acknowledge our superb staff, led by Head of Year 8 Allarice Barendilla, for shaping up this terrific growth opportunity for the students

Harmony Week

  • In celebrating the theme “Everyone Belongs”, we have had a range of activities unfolding across our K-12 school over the week. We celebrate our rich and diverse culture at AvĐÔ°® and promote a strong sense of inclusivity and belonging.

House Patron Week

  • This week we are celebrating Chisholm and DeVialar Houses with a festival of events happening over the week. This expanded model for 2024 allows a deeper connection with students and supports a boarder understanding of the charism of each House.

ACC Swimming Carnival

  • After many months of dedicated preparation, our AvĐÔ°® Christi College Senior Swim Team competes on Thursday this week at the ACC Swimming Carnival at HBF Area. Congratulations to our students for their enormous efforts in preparing to proudly represent the College. This event follows on from our successful Junior school team that won the Catholic Association of Primary School Sports Swimming competition earlier this term.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

  • The premiere of our amazing whole school musical is rapidly approaching with students and staff hard at work over recent weeks in preparation for this signature event on the College calendar.

Junior School Mass

  • We are thrilled that different Junior school student groups are attending Mass on Thursday each week at the St Thomas More Parish. We are very grateful to Fr Phong and the Parish community for their support.

These are but a few of the plethora of events happening at our College as we strive to â€ignite the spirit’ in our students to grow their gifts and talents to the full.

Friends of AvĐÔ°®

Thank you to the many parents who attended our first Friends of AvĐÔ°® (FOC) meeting for the year. We were very grateful for the energetic input from engaged parents. It was a very enjoyable and constructive evening, with lots of excellent ideas and growth opportunities shared.

We were delighted to have College Executive team members present who chaired rolling workshops seeking important feedback on the key areas of the College Calendar and App, K-12 Uniform, Parent engagement system and College activities and events to date. We aim to seek regular and ongoing feedback across key initiatives at the College so we can continue to develop our holistic learning offerings and engagement opportunities.

Thank you again to our FOC Executive team who co-constructed the agenda with the College Executive team before the meeting. We have adopted the strategy of promoting the agenda to families before the FOC meeting to allow discernment beforehand and to provide clarity and transparency. I strongly encourage all parents and caregivers to attend our FOC meetings to add their important voices to the ongoing growth of the College.

College Uniform Summer/Winter Changeover

The College is supporting all students to transition from the summer to winter uniform with an additional two-week grace period into Term 2. Therefore, the winter uniform will be compulsory for all students from the commencement of Week 3, in Term 2. This is in recognition of the warmer weather which we have been experiencing, and to support families with extra time to purchase the winter items. If we have extended periods of warmer weather, this grace period will be re-assessed in early Term 2 and communication to families will be sent if there are any changes to this arrangement.

Holidays

Given this is the last edition of eNews for the term, I would like to wish families all of the very best for an enjoyable holiday break, with the hope that you take the opportunity to spend quality time with friends and family.

I would like to again acknowledge the amazing staff that we have at the College who consistently go above and beyond to ensure that we consistently strive to provide the best possible learning environment for our students.

As we prepare for Easter and the Resurrection of Christ, may we reflect on the words of Pope Francis:

“Let us be renewed by God's mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish”

Best wishes and every blessing.

Jeff Allen

Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians

As the end of Term 1 draws closer, I want to congratulate our Year 3 and 5 students on their successful undertaking of the 2024 NAPLAN assessments. I was impressed by their dedication and level of maturity as they sat NAPLAN, some of them for the first time. It brings to mind a poignant quote from the beloved children's book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds: "Just make a mark and see where it takes you." Each student's journey through NAPLAN was like making that initial mark on a blank canvas, uncertain of what would unfold, yet bravely forging ahead. Like Vashti in the story, they discovered the potential within themselves, leaving their own unique mark on the pages of their academic journey. Just as Vashti learned to embrace her creativity, our students embraced the challenges of NAPLAN, showing resilience and determination. Their efforts are a testament to their growth and potential, and I couldn't be prouder of their achievements.

Week 8 has been filled with many activities and events across the College as we celebrated Harmony Week and Patron’s Week for Chisholm and de Vialar.

Harmony Week Reflection

Harmony Week this year was not only a celebration of cultural diversity but also a poignant reminder of our collective commitment to inclusivity and belonging. Under the theme "Everyone Belongs," our school community came together to reaffirm the importance of acceptance, respect, and unity. As students adorned themselves in attire representing their diverse cultural backgrounds, the message of inclusivity echoed loudly through the halls. Each colourful outfit became a symbol of belonging, a testament to the fact that regardless of our differences, we all have a place in our school community. Through shared laughter, dance, and stories, we embraced the beauty of our diversity while reinforcing the notion that every individual, regardless of background or heritage, is an integral part of our school family. Harmony Week reminded us that by embracing each other's uniqueness, we create a more vibrant, compassionate, and harmonious community where everyone truly belongs.

Patron Week

This week, the Junior students got to experience House Week, a beautiful College tradition that we are involved in with the introduction of the House structure to Junior School. Not only was this week a great opportunity to build that sense of belonging within each house group. It was also a chance for students to discover more about their Patron Saint. Here are some quick fun facts for children about the Patron Saints, Chisholm and de Vialar:

Saint Caroline Chisholm:

  • She became famous for her efforts to help immigrants in Australia during the 19th century.

  • She established shelters and employment opportunities for immigrants, particularly women and families, helping them settle into their new lives in Australia.

  • Caroline Chisholm's story teaches us about the importance of compassion, perseverance, and helping others, making her an inspiring figure for children to learn about.

  • Her legacy lives on today through her work in promoting social justice and helping those in need

Saint Emilie de Vialar:

  • Saint Emilie de Vialar was born in France in 1797.

  • She founded the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition, dedicated to caring for the sick and needy.

  • Saint Emilie de Vialar was known for her kindness and generosity towards the poor, especially during times of illness and hardship.

  • She believed strongly in the power of prayer and devoted her life to serving others.

  • Saint Emilie de Vialar is remembered for her courage and faith, inspiring people to help those in need and to live a life of compassion and service.

These Saints' stories can teach us about the importance of faith, kindness, and helping others, making them wonderful role models for children to learn from and admire.

Upcoming Events

Below are some upcoming events. Please check out our College calendar for further details.

  • Monday 25 March - Year 6 excursion to Parliament House

  • Tuesday 26 March - CAPSS Cricket Carnival

  • Thursday 28 March - Easter liturgy – led by Year 5 students

  • Thursday 28 March – Final day of Term 1

The end of Term 1 coincides with the end of Lent. This period of 40 days before Easter is a time for us to recalibrate our focus on what is truly important through prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Our students have demonstrated a spirit of generosity throughout the term in the way, they have supported our fundraising initiatives for Project Compassion. As we prepare for Holy Week and enter the Easter period, we encourage our families to contemplate this journey, and how we can be Easter people and bring new life into our communities through our relationship with God, ourselves and most importantly, each other.

I wish all our families a safe and restful break these coming holidays.

Warm regards
Katya Anderson
Head of Junior School

Year 8 AvĐÔ°® and Retreat

The Year 8 AvĐÔ°® and Retreat was a wonderful experience for all students. Students were given opportunities to connect with other homerooms and expand their interactions beyond their current friendship groups. Students were treated to some challenging activities that included a commando course, crate stack, archery and water-based activities. Aside from getting wet and muddy, great courage and resilience was shown in a safe and fun-filled environment. The retreat program provided time for stillness, reflection and unpacking our theme – Encountering Others.

It was wonderful to see students embrace the activities and participate in the right spirit. Our dedicated staff ensured students were cared for, encouraged and supported over the three days. Overall, the camp and retreat was a great success and a valuable experience for our Year 8 community.

Lions Youth of the Year CompetitionArreum Han-CapornThu, 21 Mar 2024 00:52:47 +0000/news-blog/2024/3/21/lions-youth-of-the-year-competition57f874e8440243944ef66aa7:57f8a565d482e9a19e4c2458:65fb846be81be36a4dfaff7fYear 12 Students Shine in Lions Youth of the Year Competition

We are thrilled to announce the remarkable achievements of three of our outstanding Year 12 students, Ruth Vincent, Joshua Diaz, and Hayden Piper, in the prestigious Lions Youth of the Year Competition.

The Lions Youth of the Year Competition, renowned for fostering leadership and public speaking skills, comprises two pivotal components: Public Speaking and Overall Youth of the Year.

Ruth Vincent & Joshua Diaz

At the Fremantle Club Heat held on Tuesday, March 12th, Joshua Diaz showcased exceptional prowess in public speaking, captivating the audience and impressing the judges with his entertaining impromptu speaking performance and eloquently prepared five-minute speech, all fully committed to memory! Although he faced stiff competition, his speech about the lessons gathered from his journey in the performing arts left an indelible mark and intrigued the Lions Members into his upcoming performance in the College Musical.

Ruth Vincent emerged triumphant in the Fremantle heat, clinching victory in the overall competition - a testament to her remarkable talent and dedication. Ruth is the College Public Speaking Captain who regularly coaches and mentors younger students in the College extra-curricular program. Her win is a huge source of inspiration to all but particularly, her team of Year 9 students who look up to her example.

Meanwhile, Hayden Piper took on a separate heat at The Lions Club of Atwell, where he exhibited exemplary skills in both the Public Speaking and Overall Youth of the Year categories, clinching victory in both areas of the competition. His outstanding performance about his passion for Basketball and Community Connections resonated with the judges, securing his well-deserved success.

Competing against students from esteemed institutions such as Perth Modern School, Rossmoyne SHS, and Christian Brother's College, our students showcased not only their academic prowess but also their leadership qualities and public speaking finesse.

The College is immensely proud of Ruth, Joshua, and Hayden for their stellar representation and commendable achievements in the Lions Youth of the Year Competition. Their dedication, talent, and commitment exemplify our vision of excellence that we strive to instil in all our students.

As they progress to the next round, the District Final scheduled for March 24th, let us continue to support and celebrate their successes. We wish them the very best and are confident they will continue to make us proud!

Public Speaking Club is held on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30pm – 4:30pm in Mayne Block.

Year 8 AvĐÔ°® and RetreatNisha MudaliarWed, 20 Mar 2024 06:24:25 +0000/news-blog/2024/3/20/year-8-camp-and-retreat57f874e8440243944ef66aa7:57f8a565d482e9a19e4c2458:65fa4fde06ae536b32573421The Year 8 AvĐÔ°® and Retreat was a wonderful experience for all students.

This event aimed to inspire girls in STEM and Coding coincided with International Women’s Day, resonating with the importance of equal participation of Women.

Organised by Apple and Winthrop Australia the event provided an insightful and empowering gathering of expert presenters including Steph Worladge from Melbourne, who demonstrated her extensive knowledge of Xcode and her skills in the mentoring of iOS Developers around the country. Leah Langdale from Sydney shared her industry experience in working with iOS Developers and App Development in Xcode and Michelle Forrest from Winthrop Australia, presented some of her specialist talents in Coding and Augmented Reality.

The Industry Showcase in the afternoon was especially interesting, as the girls were able to engage in a question-and-answer session and chat with the presenters. Our Students learnt about coding apps and the processes involved in planning and making an app, with the 'Challenge of the Day' being a team task of designing an app for a real-world scenario.

This was a uniquely informative and inspiring day that provided enjoyment, learning and challenge to our students involved.

Welcome to Week 6, Term 1

Celebrating Community

It was wonderful to see our whole school community gathered in the one place to share in the celebration of the Eucharist on Tuesday evening last week. As the AvĐÔ°® Christi, the Body of Christ, gathering for Mass is the perfect way for us to celebrate our K-12 College.

We are very grateful to our broader community for their support of this special occasion. To have parents, caregivers, families and friends join staff and students for this significant Mass was a fabulous celebration of our College and a terrific way to formally welcome in the new school year. We appreciate the busyness of people’s lives in our dynamic world, so we are most grateful for our community’s support in prioritising this special Mass and taking the time to spend some quality time with one another.

We were also very pleased to have a number of special guests at the Mass including Father Thai Vu, Deacon Bruce Talbot, CEWA Deputy Executive Director Annette Morey, CEWA School Improvement Advisor Kelly Smith, St Thomas More Council Chair Carol-Ann Norris and parishioners, the School Advisory Council and the Friends of AvĐÔ°® Executive. We thank them for their support of this special event.

The theme of the Mass was â€one bread, one body, one spirit of love’. In speaking to our community toward the end of Mass, I reflected how this theme reminds us that our community mosaic is made up of many individual parts, each with a very special and unique role to play. Together, then, we make up one inclusive community that reaches out to others with the spirit of love.

Jesus tells us to “love one another as I have loved you” and therefore challenges us to reach out to others, to be present for them, to promote their needs above our own. He calls us to serve, to accept, to forgive. He wants us to be compassionate, selfless and to truly see others for whom they are.

So, if we are all a part of the one body, one community that is the AvĐÔ°® Christi, then we have the shared responsibility to uphold what it stands for – that is be the eyes, the hands, the feet of Jesus on earth.

I connected this message of Jesus and the challenge that he presents us to our College values. In truly living out these values and modelling Jesus we:

  • Courageously stand up for what is right and actively contribute to the type of community that He envisaged

  • Commit ourselves to others – seeking peace, justice and mercy for all

  • Are compassionately present for others - walking alongside them on their journey, reaching out in support and service

In giving genuine witness to our values, we fulfill our College vision of being Outstanding for Others. That is to fully harness our gifts to be outstanding in the way that we interact and serve those around us.

A celebration of this significance does not just happen by circumstance – it is achieved through the hard work, dedication and support of many people. We are grateful to staff and students for their considerable contribution in the lead up to and during the Mass.

A very special thanks to Father Thai for celebrating our Mass. We greatly value his terrific support of our College community. We are also grateful to Deacon Bruce for his contribution to the celebration.

We thank our Catholic Identity and Mission, Administration, Grounds, ICT, Music, Arts and Executive teams, along with our Heads of Year and House Community Coordinators for their amazing contribution to the Mass. A very special acknowledgement also to our Deputy Principal Catholic Identity and Mission, Mr Damian Ramos, for his terrific efforts in leading the organisation of this very special occasion.

We were delighted at the considerable involvement of our students in the Mass. Their input enriched the experience and allowed them to share their gifts and talents with us. We were delighted to share our Catholic Arts Servite Friar award-winning liturgical movement â€Still God’ with our community as a lead into the Mass.

Our student choir and musicians were superb, adding to richness and reflectiveness of the occasion. We were thrilled to commission our newly appointed Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Community during the Mass and thank them for their contribution. To our student leaders, we acknowledge you for your enormous efforts in ensuring the success of the Mass.

We celebrate the terrific contribution that our students make to the College each and every day. It was very energising and rewarding to see our dedicated students help shape the Mass and step up to serve on this very special evening in the life of the school. We are grateful to for the enthusiastic involvement of all of our students in the Mass – from our Kindergarten students all the way through to our Graduating Class of 2024.

It was very fulfilling to see so many different parts of the mosaic come together as one in celebration of the AvĐÔ°® Christi – the Body of Christ.

Best wishes and every blessing,

Jeff Allen

Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians

Our Years 3-6 students had a wonderful day at the Interhouse Swimming Carnival. The display of swimming was outstanding, and it was impressive to see every swimmer trying their best and really challenging themselves. We always emphasise House spirit and sportsmanship in everything we do, and the swimming carnival was an incredible demonstration of these traits. It was impressive to see all our students cheering on, not just their own House, but all swimmers, which created such a supportive environment and allowed our students to really push their limits.

A big round of applause goes to Mr Trickett, who worked tirelessly to ensure everything ran smoothly.

A special thank you to our Year 6 Sports leaders, dedicated staff, and all volunteers for their efforts on the day. I also want to thank all the parents and grandparents who came to support and cheer on the students.

The efforts in the pool continued at the CAPSS interschool carnival with Years 4 and 6 taking home the overall trophy winners.

Pre-Primary House Allocation:

In the tapestry of human existence, the concept of belonging weaves a narrative thread that connects us to something greater than ourselves—a sense of home, acceptance, and community. To belong is to find connection, understanding, and a sense of home within a community or environment. It is a fundamental aspect of our identity and shapes the way we navigate the world around us.

The sense of belonging to a community was the experience created at our House Allocation event for our Pre-Primary students. It was wonderful to see the pure joy and excitement each student brought to the stage as they waited eagerly to find out which house they belong to.

At the end it was nice to connect with parents and family members over a cup of coffee, a chance for them to make connections and create that sense of belonging among each other.

 Parking at drop-off areas:

It is essential that parents adhere to road and street regulations when dropping off and collecting their child/ren. It is a regular occurrence to see:

  • Parents entering off Marsengo Drive in the no-entry zone.

  • Cars parked in the kiss and drop areas.

  • Vehicles entering with speed through the incorrect entrances.

  • Vehicles not giving way to children crossing.

We do not want to have to engage the services of the Rangers; however, we will be obliged to do this for the safety of our students if parents fail to adhere to safe driving and parking practices.

Upcoming Events:

Below are some upcoming events. Please check out our College calendar for further details.

  • Tuesday 12 March - Rice Bowl Day

  • Wednesday 13 March - Friends of AvĐÔ°® (all welcome), 6 pm.

  • NAPLAN Commencing Week 8

  • Thursday 21 March - URSTRONG – Language of Friendship Online Workshop, 6 pm.

Through the enchanting realm of children's literature, we can learn so many valuable things. In Oliver Jeffers' "Lost and Found," there emerges a captivating narrative that beautifully encapsulates the profound essence of belonging. The heart warming tale invites us to witness the extraordinary journey of a young boy and a penguin, both seeking connection and a place where they truly belong. "Friendship, said the penguin, is like a toasty-warm scarf in the chilly winds of life."  At AvĐÔ°® we recognise the transformative power of relationships and the unwavering commitment to ensuring every child experiences the embrace of friendship and understanding, ultimately finding their place in the world.

Warm regards

Welcome to Week 4, Term 1

Building Belonging and Connection

As you would be aware one of our core strategic pillars at the College is â€community’. Our intent is to create an environment that allows our students to flourish. We strive to be a welcoming and inclusive community that celebrates the uniqueness and diversity of each person.

We want to create the conditions that nurture the wellbeing, strength, and gifts of each individual to allow them to develop fully as whole persons. We aim to achieve this through building belonging, empowering students and providing rich care and support. Of course, we work in strong partnership with our families to co-create this type of thriving College environment.

It was wonderful therefore to see so many parents and caregivers wholeheartedly engage in our recent round of Parent Information Evenings across the K-12 College. We look forward to presenting additional parent engagement opportunities for remaining year levels later in the year to align with key events and milestones planned for these groups.

Some clear messaging at these events surrounded confirming the invitation for all parents and caregivers to engage in the learning of their child via SEQTA and through direct connection with teachers.  We also strongly promoted the important role of the Homeroom Teacher in the Senior School and the Classroom Teacher in the Junior School as the first port of call should there ever be any area of concern or issues. We warmly welcome regular parent/caregiver contact with College staff to build quality connections and support the holistic growth of all of our students.

Renown global educationalist Dr Lyn Sharratt provides advice on how to engage with students in their learning, whilst encouraging them to take ownership of their own growth and development, through asking them these 5 questions:

  • What are you learning?

  • How are you doing?

  • How do you know?

  • How can you improve?

  • Where do you go for help?

These simply yet probing questions allow students to reflect on their own learning and to explore avenues that might allow them to improve. In regularly asking these questions of their children, parents and caregivers can connect to their child’s learning in a genuine way, unpack potential areas of concern and, importantly, show the child that there in genuine interest and engagement in their learning.

We were also very pleased last week to run the first of our Interhouse Swimming Carnivals, with the remaining two events being held today and tomorrow. We are especially excited to celebrate the first Interhouse Carnival for the Junior School, with their efforts contributing to the overall tally across the K-12 school. These students, like all others in the school, will proudly represent their House as they give of their best in the pool and cheer strongly from the sidelines.

The Interhouse Swimming Carnivals provide an additional pathway to allow our students to shine. They promote a sense of resilience, determination and perseverance. They can provide a challenge for students and encourage them to step out of their comfort zone. Underpinning this environment of course is the rich environment of care, support and belonging that allows students to rise to the challenge and to give of their best in representing their House.

Congratulations to the Year 10-12 students who gave of their best last Friday and joined in the spirit of the event. Well done to the Year 7-9 students competed today and the Junior School students swimming tomorrow. In the spirit of belonging and connection, we again warmly invite families to attend the carnivals, with tea/coffee facilities available to enhance the experience.

Looking ahead, we are very excited to inform you that Mr Paul Litherland is again speaking with selected year groups this year about Cyber Security and Internet Awareness. Paul is an expert in this field and presents to over 850 schools and organisations across Australia. He is recognised nationally as a leading educator in the field of Internet Awareness. In support of a common language and promotion of parent educational opportunities, we invite all parents and caregiver to attend an evening session with Paul on Wednesday 28 February in the Caroline Payne Theatre commencing at 6.30pm. Further information and booking details are available HERE.

In again looking to next week, we are very excited at the prospect of our whole school gathering together on Tuesday 27 February at 5.30pm to celebrate our annual Community Mass. We hope to see many parents, families and friends present to share in this very special occasion.

We look forward to updating families on the many future events and opportunities for them to engage with the College to build belonging and connection and to support the continued growth of our flourishing school environment.

Best wishes and every blessing,

Jeff Allen

Principal

Welcome to another edition of our Junior School e-News where the spirit of curiosity and discovery continues to thrive! This week, we're excited to have year 6 Green showcase the incredible work they have been doing in exploring their character strengths. It's been an inspiring journey of self-discovery, and our assembly illuminated their enthusiasm on Tuesday.  It was a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate the uniqueness of each child and the empowering journey towards understanding and embracing their individual strengths.

Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday Celebrations:

The past week was filled with joy and reflection as we observed Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, brought smiles to every face as our students and families enjoyed delicious pancakes together. It was a day of indulgence before the solemn season of Lent.

Following Shrove Tuesday, we transitioned into Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. Our Junior School students in Years 3 to 6 participated in a meaningful Mass hosted at St Thomas More, where they received ashes on their foreheads as a symbol of humility and repentance. The reflective atmosphere allowed our young learners to understand the significance of this season and embrace the values of self-discipline, prayer, and giving back to the community. Our early childhood students from Kindy to Year 2 had a smaller reflective session in their class and received their ashes there. Together, we embark on this Lenten journey with a sense of unity and purpose.

House Swimming Carnival Year 3 to 6

Get ready to dive into the excitement as we eagerly await the much-anticipated House Swimming Carnival this Friday! The pool is set, the teams are buzzing with enthusiasm, and the air is filled with anticipation for a day of thrilling aquatic competitions. It's not just a day of swimming; it's a day of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and cheering for our fellow housemates. Whether you're a first-time participant or a seasoned swimmer, this carnival promises to be a splash of fun for everyone. So, bring your spirit, wear your house colours proudly, and be prepared for an unforgettable day of friendly rivalry and laughter. Let's make waves and create memories together at this year's House Swimming Carnival!

An announcement of the students attending the CAPSS Inter-School Swimming Carnival (YR 4 to 6) will be made on Monday 26 February. Parents will receive email notifications via SEQTA.

Pre-Primary House Allocation Event:

Anticipation is building for the upcoming Pre-Primary House Allocation event! This much-anticipated occasion marks a significant milestone in our young students' journey. On Wednesday 28 February, our Pre-Primary stars will be sorted into their respective houses. The event promises to bring a joyous atmosphere as our little ones discover their house families and embark on a journey of friendship and shared experiences. Parents are invited to join us and witness the smiles and laughter that will undoubtedly fill the room. Let's make this House Allocation event a special memory for our youngest learners as they take their first steps into the vibrant world of house spirit!

Light morning tea will be provided as an event for parents to connect.

Please see the College Calendar for further details.

In the words of Pope Francis, 'Children are the joy of the family and society; they are not only the future but also the present.' As we embark on another exciting chapter in our junior school journey, let us cherish the present moments, nurture our young ones, and create a community where each child's unique spirit flourishes. Together, let's build a future filled with compassion, curiosity, and the boundless possibilities that education brings.

Absentees can be reported through a variety of means, including the online form, SMS or email absentee@corpus.wa.edu.au.
