On 18 May, the public is invited to a bioblitz - citizen science in the form of a species hunt. Join experts from Gothenburg Global Biodiversity Centre and many of our partners, including the Department of Biological and Environmental AvÐÔ°®s , Gothenburg Botanical Gardens, Gothenburg Natural History Museum, Herbarium, Naturbruksförvaltningen and Slottsskogen participants will discover as many plant, animal and fungal species as possible, contributing to research and our understanding of the biodiversity of this area.
The bioblitz is organised in conjunction with Biodiversity Day, an annual celebration on 22 May. Participants of all ages are welcome, and no prior knowledge is required.
Biodiversity is under threat and fewer people can recognise common species, this event will help reverse the trend by encouraging people to get out into nature and discover the incredible species we share this world with. ‘We can't save biodiversity if we don't know what species are, where or how many there are,’ says Helen Ekvall, educator at the Botanical Garden and project coordinator of the EXPBIO project, which is the main organiser of the bioblitz.
During the day, the Lärjeån valley and its surroundings will be explored and researched. The life of the riverbank as well as the secrets of the forest and meadows will be explored with nets, magnifying glasses and binoculars. A bioblitz square is organised next to Blå Stället, where experts will be on hand to help to identify species found. Visitors will also be able to build their own huts, guess the poop, play nature bingo and taste honey.
