Published

World-renowned mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter is inviting the public to attend an open masterclass with opera students at the Academy of Music and Drama. This visit is part of the Academy鈥檚 Artist in Residence programme and has been made possible thanks to the generous support of the Sten A Olsson Foundation.

The masterclass will take place on Wednesday, 17 September from 5.30鈥7.30 p.m. in the auditorium of the university鈥檚 main building at Vasaparken. Attendees will gain insight into the collaboration between Anne Sofie von Otter and the students as they work on a varied repertoire.

鈥淲e had the pleasure of welcoming Anne Sofie von Otter to our opera programmes on three occasions during the last academic year. She worked with the opera students on both art song and opera repertoire. Both students and teachers greatly appreciated her deep knowledge and pedagogical skills. Anne Sofie von Otter鈥檚 visits are real highlights of the semester,鈥 says Monica Danielson, programme supervisor for opera studies at the Academy of Music and Drama.

Anne Sofie von Otter began her artist residency at the Academy of Music and Drama in autumn 2024 and is now starting her second academic year. Another residency visit is planned for February 2026.

The Artist in Residence programme provides students with in-depth tuition and artistic exchange with internationally renowned artists. Each residency lasts approximately three years and includes teaching, concerts and collaborative projects. Launched in 2018, the programme鈥檚 first artists in residence were Isabelle van Keulen, David Dencik and Ross Daly.

Anne Sofie von Otter and Vince Mendoza have been appointed for the period 2024鈥2027. A third artist in residence will be announced in September. Planning for autumn 2027 is underway in collaboration with the Sten A Olsson Foundation.

鈥淭he Artist in Residence programme is an important initiative that provides the next generation of opera singers with unique opportunities to benefit from the expertise and experience of Anne Sofie von Otter. Students will have the opportunity to develop through encounters with one of the world鈥檚 most prominent mezzo-sopranos, and audiences will gain exclusive insight into the artistic process,鈥 says Madeleine Olsson Eriksson, chair of the Sten A Olsson Foundation.
