Linguistic Structures

Linguistic structures refer to grammar in a broad sense, i.e. phonology, lexicology and morphosyntax. The research area benefits from the Department鈥檚 collective language expertise and is home to research projects that deal with the Bantu, Cushitic, Germanic, Romance, and Semitic language families.

This research area gathers PhD students, teaching staff and researchers with a focus on linguistics and a research interest in linguistic structures.

Active researchers in the research area investigate key components of linguistic structure, including the morphosyntax of verb and noun phrases, the encoding of grammatical meanings in the verbal domain, and phenomena of phonology and intonation. Methodologically, our research revolves around two principal approaches: corpus linguistics, with a particular emphasis on quantitative modeling and statistical analysis of linguistic data, and field linguistics, oriented toward the documentation and analysis of endangered and under-described languages. Theoretically, our work is characterized by a broad and inclusive orientation, with a gravitation towards functional and cognitive models of language 鈥 such as construction grammar.
