Managing university-industry centres - challenges and opportunities for the future

Gothenburg U-GOT KIES hosted a seminar on managing university-industry centres—highlighting both the challenges they present and opportunities for the future that these collaborations bring.

During the Gothenburg U-GOT KIES seminar on June 4th, we had the pleasure of hearing from two great speakers: Emil Gustafsson (PhD, Senior Project Manager at the UBC BioProducts Institute, The University of British Columbia Columbia) and Lena Gipperth (Professor & Deputy Dean at Handelshögskolan vid Göteborgs universitet/School of Business, Economics and Law), and former Director of Centrum för hav och samhälle, Göteborgs universitet/Centre for Sea and Society). The session was moderated by Professor Maureen McKelvey, Director AvÐÔ°® U-GOT KIES,

Together, they shared their experiences and reflections on managing university-industry centres—highlighting both the challenges they present and opportunities for the future that these collaborations bring. They discussed various topics, including the value of doing multidisciplinary research, how university-industry centres make networking easier, and how these centres contribute to education at the university.

Reflecting upon such university-industry centres also from a practical perspective constitutes an interesting topic for the Gothenburg U-GOT KIES centre. This is a topic that we are well-known for doing research on - partly as they are a form of academic engagement - and partly due to diversity in the organization and impact of university-industry centres due to factors such as institutional and research contexts and linkages to industry and society. Centres can play a role in the university, to renew topics, create connections amongst individuals, develop larger groups, and streamline access to specialized competencies.
